ADDGENE
Lab Technician Summer Intern
8-12 weeks with a start date in early June. 40 hours per week, at $10 per hour.

Company Description
Addgene is a non-profit company that facilitates biomedical research and discovery. Addgene assists academic scientists by archiving their plasmid DNA samples and distributing the samples to researchers who need them for future experiments. Availability of these materials is critical to the progress of research. Addgene was founded in January 2004 by graduates from Harvard and MIT. Addgene's service has received strong support from the academic community, and the company is growing rapidly.

Job Qualifications
Addgene is looking for an undergraduate biology major to help replicate our plasmid collection. Necessary qualifications include: Experience in a laboratory environment. Comfortable with pipetting, using the sterile technique, and planning experiments. Preferably an undergraduate student majoring in biology, or another life science, and completing their sophomore or junior year.

Job Description
Aid in the high-throughput replication of Addgene's plasmid collection. Duties will include performing LB and plate preparation, working closely with our scientists to plan the replication, and learning to operate a biological robot to carry out some of the replication steps. This job is a great experience for an undergraduate student to learn high-throughput biology techniques and to get exposure to working in a start-up company.

CombinatoRx has openings for internships this summer to assist in our biological and computational projects. We are seeking motivated students with experience in basic biological laboratory work or computational modeling of biological systems or pathways. We are especially interested in undergraduate students from the biology, computer science or bioengineering programmes.

CombinatoRx discovers and develops drugs that target multiple disease-relevant pathways in a coordinated way. We systematically examine hundreds of thousands of compound combinations in cellular disease models to identify synergistic pairs that can be optimized to provide novel combination therapeutics. Clinical trials are currently underway for our lead drug candidates in the areas of oncology and inflammation.

We are a dynamic, medium-sized company (~100 people), near Kendall Square. Interns will have frequent interactions with other scientists in the discovery team. A competitive stipend will be offered.

Intern - Bioengineering, Summer 2006

Primary Role: Evaluate cell loss and exchange rate in a bioreactor cell retention device (Spinfilter) and support bioreactor PD activities. Develop a method for exchange rate measurement based on pH and conductivity. (Approx. 40% of the time.) Evaluate retention and exchange rate in a spinfilter. (Approx. 40% of the time.) Assist members of The Bioengineering Group in bioreactor process development and support activities including shake-flask and bioreactor operations (Approx. 20% of the time.)

Must have completed at least sophomore year by beginning of Summer 2006, majoring in an engineering or biological discipline. Those currently working on an MS degree in those disciplines may also apply. Some experience with the measurement of mass transfer coefficients in a bioreactor is desirable. A familiarity with bioreactor operations is a plus. Strong organizational skills. Excellent teamwork skills. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.

The individual will work as part of a product development engineering team to execute the following types of activities: interactive product testing, data collection and analysis, technical and analytical problem solving, report and presentation preparation, and verification and validation studies.
