Community Service
In addition to raising funds for international non-profits, our sisters also participate in local community service arranged by the AEPhi Community Service Chairs or the MIT Public Service Center. Our theory is that community service can be both fun and meaningful. Here's what we're doing as a group this semester:
Warm Hands, Warm Hearts - Friends of Boston Homeless
Warm Hands Warm Hearts is an annual initiative by the FoBH to collect scarves, hats, gloves, jackets, and other winter apparel to give to our local homeless people. In order to support their efforts, the sisters of AEPhi decided to knit and crochet scarves. Most of our sisters didn't know how to knit or crochet before, making the project an opportunity to both help the community and improve ourselves. We will supplement our handmade goods with a collection of new and gently used winter items near the end of November.
Make a Child Smile Foundation
The Make a Child Smile Foundation exists to lend strength to children with extensive, yet likely non-terminal, medical conditions and their families. At our sorority chapter meeting each week, we participate in the MCSF greeting card drive for the month's featured children.
Community Service Fraternity Mixers
Why not? We recently held a service mixer with some Phi Delta Thetas, volunteering at the reVision Urban Farm, a transitional house for homeless women and their children. reVision grows crops in its large garden and greenhouse area, and provides that food for free to its residents and to the community via a weekly farmers' market. We helped them clear land that had been used for tomatoes in preparation for winter crops.
