“In theater-making, you have to work in a community,” says Sara Brown, who has designed sets for a wide range of productions, at many major venues. “You might bump up against some rough edges, but you develop strategies to work with everybody with dignity.”
Since World War II, new, innovation-based work in the U.S. has often been done by young, college-educated workers. It has also been driven by demand: “Wherever we make new investments, we end up getting new specializations,” David Autor says.
