Constitution

Article 1: Purpose

The purpose of MIT Argentine Tango Club (MITATC) is to establish a serious, large community of Argentine tango dancers at MIT through offering MIT students and affiliates, as well as the greater Boston/Cambridge community an opportunity to learn, practice and enjoy Argentine tango dancing in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere and at affordable prices.

Article 2: Membership

i. Any MIT student or affiliate (alumni, faculty, staff) as well as the spouse/significant other of an MIT student or affiliate is eligible to become a member of MITATC. Additionally, a person other than MIT students and affiliates can become a member of MITATC, provided that the Board of Officers of MITATC has granted such person admission to the club.

Only MIT students and affiliates and spouses/significant others of MIT students and affiliates are considered to be voting members of MITATC.

One is considered to be a member of MITATC if (s)he has paid the membership dues. If membership dues have been waived on the basis of hardship, one is considered a member if (s)he has attended at least one club activity and one meeting in the preceding or current term.


ii. The membership of MITATC will at all times contain at least 5 MIT students and be more than half MIT students.


iii. MITATC will not discriminate based on any characteristic listed in MIT's Nondiscrimination Statement.


iv. Exceptions will be made for those students who cannot afford MITATC membership dues.


Article 3: Officers

i. MITATC will have five (5) officers, all of which are required to be MIT students:

1. PRESIDENT

a. The president is the official representative of the group to any other organization and to MIT.

b. The president presides over all meetings.

c. The president is responsible for determining when meetings are and publicizing this to the group.

d. The president schedules workshops and events with the vice-president.

e. The president drafts the Club's budget with the treasurer.

2. VICE PRESIDENT

a. The vice-president performs all the duties of the president in the president's absence.

b. The vice-president is in charge of scheduling workshops and events with the president.

3. TREASURER

a. The treasurer balances the Club's checkbook.

b. The treasurer is required to sign all checks/vouchers of the group.

c. The treasurer drafts the Club's budget with the president.

d. The treasurer issues checks for reimbursement.

e. The treasurer keeps track of itemized expenses and income.

4. SECRETARY

a. The secretary is in charge of processing new and renewed membership and maintains record of the numbers.

5. PUBLICITY CHAIR/WEBMASTER

a. The publicity chair is in charge of the Bulletin Board.

b. The publicity chair makes posters and fliers for promoting the Club's activities.

c. The publicity chair sends weekly emails and any other email communications announcing activities/events of MITATC.

d. The publicity chair is in charge of maintaining MITATC's web page.

ii. The president's and treasurer's positions must be filled at all times, by distinct persons. Other officers' positions may be vacant if no eligible members show interest to fill them.

iii. ELECTIONS:

a. Elections of officers shall occur in April every year.

b. Any member of MITATC is eligible to run for office, provided (s)he is an MIT student.

c. Quorum for elections is one half of the group.

d. Any member is elected if (s)he wins a majority of the present voting members.

e. If more than two people are running and no one wins a majority, then the person with the fewest votes is dropped from the ballot and votes are recast.

f. The term of office runs from June 1st to May 31st.

iv. REMOVAL: Officers may be removed from office by a two-thirds vote of the members present.

Article 4: Meetings

1. Meetings are held at least once a semester, excluding the Summer semester.

2. Meetings are presided over by the president, unless (s)he is absent, in which case the vice-president presides.

3. All decisions are made by a majority vote of all members present.

4. Quorum for the meetings is one-quarter of the members of MITATC.

Article 5: Amendments

1. Any member of MITATC is eligible to present amendments to this Constitution.

2. Amendments are passed by a two-thirds vote of the members present.

3. Quorum for amending this Constitution is one-third of all the members of MITATC.

Article 6: ASA God Clause

MITATC agrees to abide by the rules and regulations of the Association of Student Activities, and its executive board. This Constitution, amendments to it and the by-laws of MITATC shall be subject to review by the ASA Executive Board to insure that are in accordance with the aforementioned rules and regulations.
