Admission Procedure

Applications are accepted for fall term admission and are due December 15th.

Students can either download the MIT Application from the WEB or apply directly on line from the MIT Graduate Admissions Homepage. To download application, and/or apply online click on the link.

The application fee is $70. The OR Center does not grant fee waivers. The fee is a mandatory requirement set by the Institute. MIT accepts personal checks, money orders and Mastercard and Visa for payment of the application fee.

Applications must include the following:

  • three letters of recommendation
  • complete academic transcripts
  • completed Record of Subject Section; and
  • the student's statement of objectives (one/two page).

GRE/TOEFL Requirements

GRE Examination

All applicants are required to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Aptitude test. The Department Code for submitting the GRE score report is 1302. The Institute Code for submitting GRE score reports is 3514.

English Proficiency Tests

Either the IELTS (our preferred option) or TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is required of all non-native English speakers.  Test scores must be from within the past two years.  Registration information for IELTS or TOEFL may be obtained at www.ielts.org or www.toefl.org.

TOEFL

Minimum score required:

  • 600 = paper based test,
  • 250 = computer based, and
  • 100 = internet based test.

A TOEFL waiver may be considered under certain circumstances.  Students must contact the Graduate Admissions Coordinator.  The Department Code for submitting the TOEFL score report is 67.  The Institute Code for submitting GRE score reports is 3514

IELTS

Minimum score required:  7.

Students must request that the official test scores be sent directly from the test center where you take the exam.  There are no institutional codes for IELTS.  You should request the test scores be sent to the ORC Graduate Admissions Coordinator.

The OR Center will not consider applications to the OR programs if the TOEFL and/or IELTS score is lower than the minimum score requirement.

Students wishing to concentrate specifically on operations research at either the master's degree or doctoral degree level should apply directly to the ORC interdepartmental graduate program. To do so, follow the general MIT graduate admissions procedure, and insert,

"Operations Research - Interdepartmental Program"

on the application materials instead of a department designation.

*The ROTC programs at MIT are operated under Department of Defense (DOD) policies and regulations, and do not comply fully with MIT's policy of nondiscrimination with regard to sexual orientation. MIT continues to advocate for a change in DOD policies and regulations concerning sexual orientation, and will replace scholarships of students who lose ROTC financial aid because of these DOD policies and regulations.
